Soweto born, Fuba taught and now resident in London, Johannes Phokela refigures paintings by Dutch Old Masters in order to critique accepted notions of nationalistic, ethnic and cultural identity. New works commissioned by the Institute of International Visual Arts (inIVA) form part of a touring exhibition spanning eight years of Phokela's work that launched at the Café Gallery, London, in May. In 2003 the exhibition will travel to Johannesburg and Cape Town – where it will show at the Old Townhouse, home to the Michaelis collection of 17th century Dutch art. Bruce Haines, inIVA Projects Co-ordinator, explores Phokela's oeuvre
