'Africanizing the Philosophy Curricula in Universities in Africa' by Edwin Etieyibo

There have recently been sustained discussions regarding the need to reflect on what students are being taught at universities in Africa. These discussions have also been severely cashed out within the broader debates on transformation and curriculum development.
 
The University of the Witwatersrand (WITS) Philosophy Department recently hosted a workshop entitled, 'What Are You Teaching Me? Africanizing the Philosophy Curricula in Universities in Africa' in order to better understand some of these issues within the context of the philosophy curriculum. Dr. Edwin Etieyibo shares his insight from the workshop with ART AFRICA.

ComicArtAfrica: Su Opperman in conversation with Karlien De Villiers

South African artist, Karlien de Villiers has proven herself to be a versatile and dynamic practitioner that's equally comfortable in a variety of artistic expressions, whether in sequential graphics or looser forms of painting and printmaking. She has exhibited widely in both South Africa and Europe and is currently in the process of completing her second graphic novel, Die Wildevroue, which will be released in France this year. ComicArtAfrica’s Su Opperman decided to find out more.

The 2015 Visible Award: Temporary Parliament

This Saturday, 31 October 2015, is the date for the upcoming jury event for the 2015 Visible Award! First awarded in 2011, and then again in 2013, the Visible Award is the first European award for socially engaged artistic practices in a global context. Visible itself is an ongoing research project in contemporary art devoted to art work in the social sphere, that aims to produce and sustain socially engaged artistic practices in a global context.

Look out for a review of this weekend's open jury consultation, chaired by Chris Dercon, in the upcoming December issue of ART AFRICA!

Announcing the 2015 ArtReview Power 100!

As the most established ranking within the artworld, contemporary art magazine ArtReview’s Power 100 provides a unique snapshot of the contemporary art scene as it stands today. This ranking of figures is compiled by an invited international panel, with entrants judged on their international influence over the production of art and their contribution to the artworld during the past twelve months.
 
ART AFRICA would like to congratulate all those who made it onto the list, with special mention going to Okwui Enwezor (who made the Top 20 this year at #17), Roselee Goldberg (#57), Koyo Kouoh (climbing to #73) and William Kentridge (a new entry at #81). Well done to all of you!

'My World': Senzo Shabangu at David Krut Projects, Johannesburg

David Krut Projects in Parkwood, Johannesburg presents ‘My World’, a solo exhibition by Senzo Shabangu which officially opened on Saturday the 3rd of October 2015. This solo exhibition is the fourth under Shabangu’s belt, and his second within this main gallery space. The exhibition spans an assortment of mediums – from ink to charcoal drawings, and from linocuts to lithograph prints in limited edition. Khehla Chepape Makgato, an independent artist and arts writer, contributes his voice to the exhibition.

Curatorial Concept Announced for 2016 Marrakech Biennale for Contemporary Art

Curated by Reem Fadda, the 6th edition of the Marrakech Biennale announces its curatorial concept, 'Not New Now.' The curatorial concept aims to provide for an intellectual framework that unites multiple arenas of art and cultures by looking at it from the particular location and history of the city of Marrakech. It builds on a longstanding history of Pan Afro-Arab unity, through critically investigating socio political projects, cultural partnerships, and art movements that have led to many shared artistic tendencies.

The heritage sites of Marrakech will invoke these moments of intersection, through a plethora of site-specific commissions and installations, by a group of international artists especially from Africa, the Arab world and its diasporas. Performances, displays of archives, film programs, seminars, lectures and even conferences will provide for a dynamic structure that looks at and cements these cultural commonalities and relationships.

ART AFRICA In Conversation with Koyo Kouoh About 1:54 FORUM, London 2016

With the 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair opening its doors at Somerset House in London today (15 October 2015), ART AFRICA looks back at our conversation with Koyo Kouoh, coordinator of the 1:54 FORUM educational and artistic programme for this year -- focusing on the artistic and intellectual relationships between the Maghreb or North Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa or ‘Black Africa.’
 
South African art historian Liese Van der Watt speaks to  Kouoh, the founding artistic director of RAW Material Company, her own organisation based in Dakar, Senegal, which was established to promote and stimulate critical, theoretical and analytical conversation around contemporary art production. FORUM is essentially a continuation of that agenda, albeit on a larger platform.

Visiting Arts (UK), in partnership with The Africa Centre, based in South Africa, prepares for the World Cultures Connect ‘Creative Skills’ training programme for arts practitioners from the 11-13 November 2015 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and 17-19 November 2015 in Lilongwe, Malawi. The Creative Skills training programme calls for artists and creative practitioners looking to develop their business to submit an application to join us in November.

On the back of a successful New York satellite edition and in anticipation of the third edition in London, opening next week, ART AFRICA spoke with founder Touria El Glaoui about the challenges faced and how the fair in all its multiplicity intends to challenge and engage the concept of an ‘African’ aesthetic. This year’s fair seeks to address the “imagined division of Africa into two cartographies,” North and South; an interrogation supported by FORUM, the fair’s educational and artistic programme.

'YOUNG COLLECTORS' Exhibition: ART AFRICA in conversation with Mika Thom

 Although Fried Contemporary is well into its tenth year of bringing contemporary art to Pretoria, the ‘Young Collectors’ exhibition that opened on the 3rd of September 2015 is definitely a first of its kind. It serves as a sort of democratisation of the art world that allows for greater participation from artists, curators and audiences alike. ART AFRICA met up with gallery director Mika Thom to discuss the potential of such an exhibition, the work on show, and the importance of establishing a 'buying culture' amongst South Africa's emerging markets:

Exhibition Review: 'The Voice of a Citizen' by Arlene Amaler-Raviv

Arlene Amaler-Raviv’s solo exhibition ‘The Voice of a Citizen,’ currently on show at the South African Jewish Museum (SAJM) in Cape Town, brings to mind the allegory of Plato’s cave. In this particular instance her account appears to play out the role of the anguished prisoner who has witnessed the world beyond the cave wall yet — like all those imprisoned — is unable to completely shake the shadows that circumscribe their mutual reality.
