Zanele Muholi was honoured at the Index on Censorship Awards for 'courage and the powerful statements made by her work.' South African photographer and LGBT activist Zanele Muholi challenges traditional perceptions of the black female body — and specifically black lesbians — through her work.

Zorba the Greek's South African art for sale at Bonhams in London

Eight works from the collection of Anthony Quinn, the late American actor, feature in the next Bonhams sale of South African art on March 20th in New Bond Street, London. Including paintings and sculptures by Cecil Skotnes, Lucky Sibiya, Dumile Feni-Mhlaba and Cyprian Shilakoe, the selection ranges in price from £2,500 to £30,000.

Photography from and about Africa is gaining interest and scholarship judging from the turn out at the one day symposium Distance and Desire: Encounters with the African Archive, held this past November, 2012 in New York. Organized by The Walther Collection, the symposium builds on their current three-part exhibition, by the same name, curated by Tamar Garb.
