Maggie Laubser exhibition at the Sasol Kunsmuseum, Stellenbosch

on .

The 21st birthday of the Eben Dönges Centre of the Stellenbosch University, home of the well known Sasol Art Museum, will be celebrated on the 3 October with a private function (by invitation only) and the opening of the retrospective exhibition ALTYD LIG Maggie Laubser (1886 -1973). Prof Muller Ballot is the guest curator.

Altyd Lig (Always Light) was the name of her house in the Strand. Maggie Laubser bequeathed all the paintings in her house at the time of her death, certain furniture and household effects and the remainder of her estate to the Stellenbosch University. She expressed the desire that the paintings should be displayed in one room as the Maggie Laubser Collection. The year following her death, her wishes were carried out when the works were exhibited in the old Lutheran Church in Dorp Street, then the University's first Art Museum, now known as the US Art Gallery. In 1991 the collection moved to the newly established Sasol Art Museum in Ryneveld Street, Stellenbosch.

The exhibition ALTYD LIG consists of 129 works from the Maggie Laubser Collection and other donations or bequests; 13 works of contemporaries such as Hugo Naudé, Ruth Prowse, Strat Caldecott en Irma Stern from other University collections; and paintings on loan from Sanlam, Iziko National Art Gallery, Cape Town; the Pretoria Art Museum and the Antonij Rupert collection.
The exhibition opens to the public on the 4th October and closes on 19 January 2013.

Museum hours: Mondays 10:00 – 16:30; Tuesdays – Saturdays 09:00 – 16:30
